Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey will be free to enter into a pre-contract agreement with other clubs in January, and Inter Milan are closely monitoring the situation of the Fulham captain.
The Italian giants have been linked with the Nigerian as they consider options for their defence, and the 26-year-old’s left-footed profile makes him a natural candidate for the left side of their back three.
However, that is also the position occupied by Bastoni, one of the Nerazzurri’s best defenders.

Bassey has worked hard to rebuild his career after a difficult spell at Ajax, establishing himself at Fulham and demonstrating that he can compete in the Premier League as he recently surpassed the 100-game mark in the English top-flight.
A move to a club of Inter’s stature would be a significant step, but only if he’s offered a promise of regular football.
Bastoni blocks Bassey’s route to Inter’s starting XI
As Afrik-Foot previously explained in the three hurdles that could derail Bassey’s Inter transfer, the Nigerian’s potential role in the team is an important consideration, but Bastoni’s presence is the biggest obstacle.
Inter’s system places importance on the left-sided centre-back, a role Bastoni has made his own through his runs, passing range and ability to help build attacks.
Bassey shares several of the attributes required for that position. He is left-footed, physically strong and capable of defending large spaces, while his distribution has improved during his time in England.

Those similarities make him an attractive alternative if Inter ever decide to move on from Bastoni. But while the Italian remains at San Siro, Bassey would have to compete with an established first-choice defender for the role that best suits him.
That creates a dilemma for the Super Eagles star. Having progressed from his frustrating Ajax experience to become an important player at Fulham, he would have little incentive to exchange regular Premier League football and a captain’s armband for a position on Inter’s bench.
The former Rangers defender offers versatility, including the ability to operate higher up the pitch, but that doesn’t guarantee a place in the starting XI.
Bastoni is under contract until 2028, and has piqued interest from Barcelona. However, his agent, Tulio Tinti, said in June that the defender would remain at Inter, making any potential departure uncertain.

Could Barcelona open the door for Calvin Bassey?
Barcelona’s interest in Bastoni offers an alternative. The Spanish club have been linked with the Italian as they look to strengthen their defence, and the losses to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have added to scrutiny of their defensive options.
If Barcelona were to make a successful move for Bastoni, Inter would have a vacant spot on the left side of their back three, and by then, a move for Bassey would be easier to negotiate for the player and the club.
For now, that possibility depends on several events falling into place. Barcelona would need to pursue Bastoni seriously, Inter would have to consider selling him, and Bassey would need to fit the club’s plans.

The Nigerian has already shown that he can rebuild his career after a difficult move. His next decision must be about more than joining a bigger club where he can compete for titles across all fronts, a situation former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh believes should be a prerequisite.
As long as Bastoni remains Inter’s preferred left-sided centre-back, Bassey’s proposed move to Italy will continue to be on hold.
