Chibuike Nwaiwu biography: From Enyimba to Trabzonspor, stats, age & Super Eagles career

Chibuike Nwaiwu is a 23-year-old Nigerian centre-back who has climbed from a Port Harcourt academy to the Turkish Super Lig in under five years, winning an NPFL title, an Austrian Cup and Super Eagles caps along the way. This is his story so far.

Chibuike Nwaiwu biography: From Port Harcourt to Heartland

Chibuike Godfrey Nwaiwu was born on 23 July 2003 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. That makes him 23 years old. He stands 1.93m (6ft 4in) tall and plays as a centre-back.

His football career began at the Borussia Digitals Sporting Academy, and his first professional club was Heartland, where he made 17 appearances across the 2021/2022 campaign without scoring. It was a short spell, but it was enough to put him on the radar of bigger NPFL sides.

Enyimba: An NPFL title at 19

In September 2022, Nwaiwu moved to Enyimba International. The timing was ideal. He was part of the squad that won the 2022-23 Nigeria Professional Football League title, and for a defender barely out of his teenage years, a title-winning season at one of the country’s most decorated clubs was a serious calling card.

His time at Aba lasted until 2024. In that period, he played 44 games for the People’s Elephants and scored one goal, a modest return that tells the story of what the role demanded.

His performances also earned national recognition early. In March 2023, he was called up to the Nigeria U23 squad for the Olympic qualifiers ahead of Paris 2024.

Wolfsberger AC: Europe and a first trophy

In September 2024, Nwaiwu signed for Austrian Bundesliga side Wolfsberger AC on a contract running till 2027. It was his first move outside Nigeria, and it came with a quick return.

In his first season in Carinthia, Wolfsberger won the 2024-25 Austrian Cup, the club’s first top-flight domestic trophy. Nwaiwu started the final.

In all, Chibuike Nwaiwu played 45 games for Wolfsberger, scoring five goals and providing one assist, showing that a defender from the NPFL could adapt to the pace and demands of European football.

Trabzonspor move: Turkish Super Lig football

In January 2026, Nwaiwu stepped up again, joining Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super Lig.

For the budding defender, Wolfsberger was a platform. Trabzonspor is the bigger stage, with a demanding fanbase, heavier media attention and regular fixtures against Turkey’s best-resourced clubs.

His shirt number at Trabzonspor is 27, and in first five months at the club, he won the Turkish Cup alongside Nigerian teammates Paul Onuachu and Anthony Nwakaeme.

What position does Chibuike Nwaiwu play?

Nwaiwu is a centre-back. His height gives him a clear advantage in aerial duels, and that is where he is most comfortable, both defending crosses and attacking set pieces.

Main strengths

• Aerial presence: At 1.93m, he is a natural threat in both boxes.
• Physicality: He is comfortable in duels and in a back line that defends deep.
• Set-piece threat: His goals at Trabzonspor have come as a centre-back, which makes him a useful extra option from corners and free kicks.
• Experience of winning: An NPFL title, an Austrian Cup, and a Turkish Cup title.

Chibuike Nwaiwu and the Super Eagles: a late call-up and a debut

Nwaiwu’s Super Eagles story began in March 2026, and it kicked off in a hurry. Calvin Bassey withdrew injured from the squad for the March friendlies, and Nwaiwu was called in as a last-minute replacement.

He made his debut in the 2-1 friendly win over Iran in Antalya on 27 March 2026.

He then featured in both matches of the 2026 Unity Cup in London, against Zimbabwe (a 2-0 win at The Valley on 26 May) and Jamaica (a 3-0 win in the final four days later). That brought his tally to three senior caps, all in friendlies or invitational tournaments.

His first competitive test could be next. Nigeria are in Group L of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers alongside Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and Tanzania, and Nwaiwu is in the frame to move from friendlies into official fixtures.

Chibuike Nwaiwu’s family: Wife, Melissa, and daughter Jacinta

Away from football, Chibuike Nwaiwu has a family with his wife, Melissa. The Nigerian defender became a father for the first time in May 2026, when the couple welcomed a baby girl named Jacinta.

Trabzonspor announced the birth, congratulating Nwaiwu and wishing their daughter a healthy and happy life. Nwaiwu has also spoken about the importance of his family and what they mean to him.
