Super Eagles no.10 Fisayo Dele-Bashiru made the worst possible start to life under Maurizio Sarri, drawing heavy criticism as the Biancocelesti fell 2–0 to newly promoted Como.
His timid display in midfield has raised questions not only about his fit in the 66-year-old’s system, but also about his readiness ahead of Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers in September.
While Cesc Fàbregas’ Como dazzled with pace and tactical fluidity, Dele-Bashiru looked lost in the heart of Lazio’s midfield, unable to shield the defence or spark attacks.

Press ratings paint grim picture for Fisayo Dele-Bashiru
The Italian press did not spare Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, calling into question his understanding of the role and suitability for the Sarri style.
Tuttosport gave him a 4.5, noting that the attempted transformation into a deeper midfielder showed “no encouraging signs.” La Gazzetta dello Sport also scored him 4.5, faulting him for leaving Lazio’s midfield exposed and failing to link with the forwards. Il Messaggero were harsher, awarding a 4 and accusing him of being “too careful not to make a mistake.”

The timing of the scrutiny is delicate. Nigeria face Rwanda and South Africa in two crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month, and Dele-Bashiru’s form will come under the microscope as Eric Chelle considers his midfield options.
Last season, the 24-year-old showed glimpses of promise on loan at Lazio, scoring three goals in 20 league appearances under Marco Baroni, form that earned him a permanent summer move to Rome. However, on this evidence, he must turn up quickly or risk slipping down the pecking order for both club and country.
