Why Gift Orban may beat Victor Osimhen to Super Lig golden boot

Published on by

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is undoubtedly the best striker in the Turkish Süper Lig, but he faces keen competition this season with the influx of several decent strikers.

Over the last two years, names like Romelu Lukaku, Dušan Vlahović, Vedat Muriqi, and Mason Greenwood have moved to the Süper Lig, thereby increasing the competition.

Nigerian players have not been left out, as some of them moved to the Süper Lig during the summer transfer window. One such player is Gift Orban, who joined newly promoted Amedspor on a season-long loan.

Since making the transfer, he has proved to be a revelation. This season, he has contributed nine goals and four assists in ten games. His goals have been key for an Amedspor side that is pulling up trees in the Turkish top flight.

They currently sit second on the Süper Lig table with 23 points from ten games. They are just two points behind reigning champions Galatasaray.

Orban has been the man at the center of their impressive run this season, having been involved in over half of their 25 league goals.

The Nigerian striker added to his tally on Sunday when they thrashed Eyüpspor 5-1. Currently, he shares the top spot in the Golden Boot race with Osimhen, who also has nine goals this season.

Orban is once again showing signs of the ruthless, fiery striker he was at Gent three years ago. The 24-year-old is full of confidence, and it shows in how and where he shoots. Given the way Orban operates, he does not simply sit in the box waiting for chances; he roams the entire final third, and that fluidity regularly affords him space in dangerous areas.

Why Gift Orban Might Surpass Victor Osimhen This Season

Given the way Osimhen has started the season, predicting that he will win the Golden Boot at the end of the campaign seems like a no-brainer. But with Orban matching him goal for goal, the battle might just go down to the wire.

In fact, there is a chance that Orban might eventually overtake him. This is not because Orban is a better player, but rather due to Osimhen’s injury record. Also, since Galatasaray are still competing in Europe, they will likely want to manage his minutes to keep him fresh, especially for the high-stakes fixtures.

Last season, Osimhen played 22 league games, compared to 29 appearances two seasons ago. This season, he has already missed two matches. Before the campaign wraps up, it is easy to foresee him missing a few more fixtures.

Orban, on the other hand, usually stays fit and does not have any continental commitments to worry about. He is solely focused on the league and domestic cup matches. If he logs more minutes on the pitch, there is a strong probability he will score more goals.

However, Osimhen plays for a bigger and higher-quality side, meaning he will consistently receive higher-quality chances to exploit. Things are different for Orban, who plays for a relatively weaker team. The club is enjoying a fairytale run at the moment, but if that momentum halts, Orban’s goal return could easily dry up as well.

Both players will look to keep firing on all cylinders until the end of the season.
