Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has clarified his decision to substitute Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman during his team’s 2-0 victory over Venezia at the Stadio Pierluigi Penzo on Sunday.
Lookman was replaced by Juan Cuadrado in the 46th minute, a decision that raised eyebrows among the La Dea faithful.
Highlighting Lookman's struggles to contribute defensively, Gasperini emphasised the need for greater cohesion within the team as they faced an improving Venezia side in the second half.

Before being substituted, Lookman recorded one shot on target that hit the woodwork. He completed one successful dribble out of two attempts, registered 30 touches, and achieved 12 accurate passes out of 17, reflecting a success rate of 71%. Additionally, he provided three key passes, made one accurate cross out of six attempts, won one of four ground duels, one of two aerial duels, and lost possession 11 times.
Gasperini addresses Lookman's performance and substitution decision
Speaking to DAZN , the sports streaming service, in the aftermath of his side's victory over Venezia, Gasperini provided insight into his decision to substitute Ademola Lookman at half-time.
He stated, “He struggled to get back and help out in defence, so was not playing for the team. Venezia were improving and I needed to tie the team together more.”
The Nigeria international has been a key player in Gasperini's system since joining from RB Leipzig in 2022. He played a significant role in La Dea's historic achievement of winning their maiden European silverware, scoring a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in last season's Europa League final, which secured this remarkable feat for the Italian club.

In the ongoing campaign, Lookman has made seven appearances for Atalanta across all competitions, contributing three goals and three assists, while averaging 69 minutes of play per game.
