Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi put up a sensational performance in Fulham’s 3-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at Craven Cottage on Thursday evening.
The Nigerian international’s brace and all-round display earned him the man-of-the-match award, propelling Fulham into sixth place on the Premier League table.
Iwobi’s stellar outing marked a historic performance, as he became the first Premier League player in 2024 to record 2+ goals, 3+ successful take-ons, 5+ duels won, and 5+ possessions won in a single game.
A performance of substance
The Hale End Academy product opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a clinical right-footed strike from the center of the box, giving Fulham an early lead. Though Brighton equalized in the 56th minute through Carlos Baleba, Fulham regained their advantage thanks to an own goal by Matt O’Riley in the 79th minute.
Iwobi sealed the victory in the 87th minute with another right-footed effort, assisted by Antonee Robinson.
The 28-year-old’s attacking output this season has been remarkable. With eight goal contributions (G/A) in the Premier League so far in 2024/2025, he has already surpassed his tally of seven from the entire 2023/2024 campaign.
In his last six league matches, Iwobi has registered four goals and two assists, demonstrating a consistent run of form.
The numbers behind the performance
Iwobi’s impact extended beyond his goals. In 90 minutes, he registered 52 touches and completed 23 of 34 passes (68% accuracy), including two accurate long balls. He attempted four dribbles, successfully completing three, while also winning four of nine ground duels and his only aerial duel.
Defensively, the former Arsenal man made one interception, one tackle, and three clearances. However, he also lost possession 16 times and was dribbled past once.
Offensively, he was sharp, registering two shots on target and one blocked shot. His expected goals (xG) stood at 0.29, while his expected assists (xA) was 0.07, reflecting his efficiency in front of goal despite limited opportunities.
Iwobi’s compatriot Calvin Bassey also featured prominently, playing the full 90 minutes in defense.
