Iwobi’s Puskás-worthy strike insufficient as Fulham collapse against Wolves

Alex Iwobi’s impressive scoring streak against Wolverhampton Wanderers continued as he netted a sublime opener for Fulham in their 4-1 home defeat on Saturday. 

The Super Eagles midfielder unleashed a stunning left-footed shot from outside the box, courtesy of a Kenny Tete assist in the 20th minute. campaign. 

This marked Iwobi’s sixth goal in his last eight games against Wolves and his third in 12 appearances for Fulham this season.

Iwobi remained lively throughout the game. In the 70th minute, his playmaking nearly brought Fulham back into contention as he set up Harry Wilson, whose shot from distance rattled the bar. 

Late in stoppage time, Iwobi had another chance to make it 3-2 with a right-footed shot, but Wolves’ goalkeeper thwarted him. Moments later, Wolves sealed their dominant performance with Gonçalo Guedes’ injury-time strike.

The Nigerian international recorded two shots on target and a key pass but struggled in duels, winning only two of eight ground challenges.

Calvin Bassey, Iwobi’s compatriot, also featured for the entire match, enduring a challenging evening in Fulham’s backline. He registered 91 touches and completed 90% of his passes, including three accurate long balls. Defensively, Bassey made three clearances and blocked one shot but failed to register a tackle or interception. His struggles in duels were evident, winning only one of four challenges.

Iwobi has been a bright spot for Fulham this season, starting all 12 league games and averaging 87 minutes per match. He now has three goals and two assists, with an xG of 0.12 and xA of 0.04 against Wolves, highlighting his consistent attacking contributions.
