Nigerian teenage midfielder John Otomewo has made a huge step in his career after joining six-time French champions Stade de Reims from Israeli side Hapoel Jerusalem, Afrik Foot reports.
The deal, worth €1.6 million per Transfermarkt, makes Otomewo the biggest sale in Hapoel Jerusalem’s history and caps an extraordinary journey from Gombe United to European football in less than two years.
While Portuguese side Rio Ave presented a financially superior offer, the 19-year-old ultimately chose Reims.

Key reasons behind John Otomewo’s decision to join Stade de Reims
1. Reims offered the best development pathway
According to intermediary Sergio Mannah, who played a major role in facilitating the move, Reims represented the ideal environment for Otomewo’s long-term growth.
“When Stade Reims came in, we felt it was the perfect fit for him. It is a better environment for his development,” Mannah said in quotes revealed by Footy Africa.
At just 19, regular football and tactical development are likely to be more important than immediate financial rewards.
Reims have built a strong reputation for developing young talent, and despite playing in Ligue 2 next season, the club remain one of France’s biggest historical institutions.
Their objective will undoubtedly be immediate promotion back to Ligue 1, potentially allowing Otomewo to grow within a competitive project rather than being thrown into an unsuitable environment too early.

2. The Nigerian connection made the move easier
Another important factor may have been the growing Nigerian presence at Stade de Reims.
The club has become something of a hub for Nigerian talent in recent years.
Hafiz Umar Ibrahim successfully integrated from the reserve side into the first team, while Oluwatosin Demehin and Rofiat Imuran enjoyed impressive spells with the women’s team before earning moves elsewhere.
Former Nigerian youngster Amos Ochoche also developed within the club’s system.
That track record likely provided reassurance that Reims understand how to integrate and develop Nigerian players.

For a teenager moving to another new country after only one season in Israel, familiarity and support structures can be crucial.
The presence of fellow Nigerians and a club already accustomed to working with Nigerian talents may have significantly influenced the decision.
3. The move boosts his Super Eagles ambitions
Otomewo’s rapid progress has already attracted the attention of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle.
The teenager is being closely monitored and has already been identified as a potential option for Nigeria’s Under-23 side.
A move to France could significantly improve his visibility. French football has historically been one of the best platforms for African players hoping to break into their national teams.
Strong performances at Reims would place him in a much stronger position ahead of future international call-ups.
Furthermore, Ligue 2 remains considerably more competitive and visible than the Israeli Premier League.

For a player still hoping to establish himself on the international stage, this represents another important step.
4. Reims could become a springboard to Europe’s elite
Otomewo’s profile appears perfectly suited to French football. Standing at 1.86 metres, he combines physicality, defensive awareness and excellent ball-winning ability.
Earlier this year, the CIES Football Observatory ranked him as the best Under-19/Under-20 defensive midfielder outside Europe’s top five leagues.
Reims have helped several young players showcase their abilities before moving to bigger clubs.
Should Otomewo continue developing at his current rate, the French club could become another stepping stone towards Europe’s elite leagues.

For now, though, the focus remains on development. From Abia Comets and Gombe United to becoming Hapoel Jerusalem’s record sale and joining one of France’s most historic clubs, Otomewo’s rise has already exceeded expectations, and at 19 years old, the Nigerian midfielder is just getting started.
