Ademola Lookman has sparked speculation about a potential return to the Premier League after his exceptional form for Atalanta, with several English clubs reportedly monitoring the Nigerian forward.
Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur are believed to have scouts closely tracking the 27-year-old, whose 2024 Ballon d’Or nomination and electrifying performances have cemented his status as one of Europe’s most exciting attackers.
Lookman has not only impressed in Serie A but has also delivered on the biggest stages.
Despite Atalanta’s 3-2 loss to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League group stage, the Nigerian international shone brightest, scoring a goal and creating numerous chance.
In a match that also featured the likes of Vinícius Júnior, Jude Bellingham, and Kylian Mbappé, Lookman's display earned him the Man of the Match award.
A Premier League-ready talent
When asked about the possibility of returning to England, Lookman said, “Obviously, the player that I was then is definitely the completely different player than I am today. And as a person, I have grown up and matured a lot.
“Wherever the future takes you, we shall see.” he told Sporty TV.
Lookman’s evolution into a world-class forward has been remarkable. After struggling during stints at Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City, the former Charlton Athletic academy graduate has found his best form at Atalanta.
He has scored 11 goals and provided five assists in just 18 appearances this season, continuing the fine form that saw him tally 17 goals and 10 assists across all competitions in 2023/2024.
His current numbers put him ahead of some of the Premier League’s prominent attackers, and should place on him on the radar of every title hopeful.
Arsenal’s need for a clinical edge
Among the Premier League clubs linked to Lookman, Arsenal arguably have the greatest need for his services.
Gabriel Martinelli’s inconsistent numbers this season have raised questions about the Gunners’ attack. Many suggest that the Brazilian’s form is hindered by a lack of support from Arsenal’s left-central midfielder and overlapping fullback.
However, Lookman has demonstrated his ability to thrive without such dependencies, as shown by his stunning solo goal against Napoli earlier this season.
Adding Lookman to Mikel Arteta’s squad could provide Arsenal with a direct, efficient, and versatile attacking option capable of challenging defenders one-on-one, linking play with midfielders, and making decisive contributions in the final third.
The Case for Liverpool and Chelsea
Liverpool’s high-octane style under Arne Slot could also benefit from Lookman’s dynamism and work rate. His ability to press from the front and exploit tight spaces would fit seamlessly into their system.
However, it remains unseen if Luis Diaz would be dropped to the bench for him or if he’d be deployed as a replacement for club legend, Mohammed Salah.
Meanwhile, Chelsea, under the guidance of Enzo Marseca, could use Lookman’s creativity and clinical edge to further bolster their attack as they look to secure a top-four finish and possibly give Liverpool a run for their money.
Newcastle and Manchester United: Outsiders in the race
Newcastle United’s scouting interest reflects their ambitions to build a deep, competitive squad capable of challenging on multiple fronts. Lookman’s Champions League pedigree and ability to perform on big occasions make him a perfect fit.
For Manchester United, Lookman represents an upgrade over their current left-sided options. Rashford’s drop in form and Alejandro Garnacho’s struggles have left United’s hierarchy searching for consistency.
Lookman’s superior numbers, experience, and growth into a proven match-winner make him a viable target, though their financial constraints and league position might hinder their chances of securing his signature.
