Nigeria’s Super Eagles B secured their spot at the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Ghana’s Black Galaxies on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

After a tense goalless first-leg encounter in Accra, the return leg saw the Nigerian side unleash a stunning first-half display, which effectively ended the contest early.

Goals from Sodiq Ismail, Nduka Junior, and Isaac Saviour inside the opening 26 minutes gave the home side an unassailable lead.

The Black Galaxies showed more fight after the break, looking to salvage some pride. Their efforts were rewarded in the 73rd minute when Stephen Amenkona fired home to reduce the deficit.

However, Nigeria’s defense stood firm for the remainder of the game, ensuring no further damage and seeing out the victory.

Nigerian fans react

Nigerians took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their thoughts on the victory, with much of the praise directed at the coaching duo of Fidelis Ilechukwu and Daniel Ogunmodede.

Fans described the pair as a “match made in heaven,” likening their partnership to a perfect combination. They expressed optimism about their potential, urging continued investment in their tactical approach, which has been widely lauded as a modern take on African football.

Another section of fans expressed a preference for the home-based Super Eagles, arguing that their style is better suited to African football.

Some suggested that the squad should have been given the chance to feature in the dead-rubber 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda. The criticism didn’t stop there, as Europe-based players, including Victor Boniface, came under fire, with fans questioning their commitment and effectiveness in continental competitions.

What’s next for Super Eagles B?

The result ensured a 3-1 aggregate victory for Nigeria, booking their place in the tournament set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from February 1 to February 25, 2025.

Having secured CHAN qualification, attention now shifts to preparations for the tournament. With a blend of promising talent and tactical clarity, Nigeria’s Super Eagles B will aim to make a significant impact come February.
