Ogbu: Why Slavia rejected substantial Galatasaray offer for Nigerian defender

Czech First League giants Slavia Prague have turned down a lucrative bid from Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray for former Flying Eagles centre-back Igoh Ogbu.

Since joining Slavia Prague in the winter of 2023, the Nigerian centre-back has been a key figure in the team’s defence, delivering standout performances that have attracted interest from several top European clubs.

Eager to strengthen their backline, the Turkish champions submitted a significant €12 million bid in an attempt to secure his services.

However, the Czech club turned it down—not due to the fee, but because of their priorities for the season.

A source from inFotbal.cz confirmed that Slavia rejected Galatasaray's bid for Igoh Ogbu as they remain focused on winning the league title and securing Champions League qualification.

Having already made key sales in the winter, the club was unwilling to further weaken their defence at this crucial stage of the campaign.

Despite this setback, Galatasaray’s pursuit of the 24-year-old may not be over. The Turkish giants are expected to revisit their interest in the summer, when Slavia Prague could be more open to negotiations.

While the Turkish transfer window remains open until February 11, any immediate hopes of securing the Nigerian defender appear to be on hold—for now.

Slavia Prague currently sit atop the Czech First League table with 53 points, holding a 10-point lead over second-placed Viktoria Plzeň and a 13-point advantage over third-placed Sparta Prague after 20 matches.

Ogbu joined Slavia Prague from Norwegian side Lillestrøm for €2.5 million and has since been a key figure in their squad.

He has made 82 competitive appearances, registering three goals and one assist, and played a pivotal role in their Czech Cup triumph during the 2022/23 season.
