‘I wouldn’t have gone for that ball’ – Osimhen’s idol reacts to stunning goal vs Monza

Published on by Godfred Budu

Victor Osimhen's goal against Monza on Sunday left many, including his idol Didier Drogba in awe.

The Super Eagles striker broke his goal drought of five matches as Napoli secured their first win since defeating Juventus in early March.

Osimhen has always openly expressed his admiration for the Ivory Coast and Chelsea legend, whom he considers his idol.

There are hushed talks that their bromance is the reason why Osimhen could opt for Chelsea instead of the other clubs interested in his services.

How Osimhen defied gravity to score the wonder goal

The Nigerian soared above Armando Izzo and Pablo Mari with astonishing agility, meeting a cross from his teammate Frank Zambo-Anguissa in mid-air.

In a gravity-defying leap reminiscent of Michael Jordan's prowess, soaring two metres and 23 centimetres, he scored a spectacular header, leaving spectators astonished and sparking widespread discussion for his splendid goal.

Last season, Osimhen surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo’s jump record of 2.56 meters by reaching an impressive height of 2.58 meters to score in a 3-0 victory over Spezia, as reported by Corriere dello Sport via Tutto Napoli.

Drogba effusive in his praise of Osimhen's goal

Offering his perspective on the goal, Drogba expressed his astonishment, stating, “I saw Victor score that goal against Monza. Oh God! He got hurt, I thought. I wouldn't have gone for that ball, it's crazy. An absurd goal!”

This is undoubtedly a significant endorsement for Osimhen from a man who scored plenty of goals with his head during his playing days.

Osimhen's goal marked his 19th headed goal. Since his Serie A debut, he ranks second only to Harry Kane in goals scored among players in the five major European leagues.

In the Serie A this season, the Super Eagles forward has scored 12 goals whilst providing three assists in 19 games.

Osimhen's future still uncertain

Linked with some of Europe's elite clubs, including Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Arsenal, and Manchester United, the Nigerian striker finds himself at the centre of intense transfer talks.

In the face of keen interest from these esteemed clubs, Osimhen's destination remains unclear. Each potential move presents its own set of opportunities and challenges, leaving fans and connoisseurs alike eagerly awaiting his decision with a great deal of apprehension.

For Chelsea, Osimhen could provide a potent attacking threat, bolstering their frontline with his pace, power, and goal-scoring prowess.

Meanwhile, PSG offer the allure of competing for domestic and continental silverware alongside some of the world's top talents.

Arsenal, seeking to rejuvenate their squad, see Osimhen as a key addition to their rebuilding efforts, while Manchester United aim to strengthen their attacking options in their quest to restore their lost glory.

However, in the midst of the speculation frenzy, Osimhen's reluctance to divulge his future plans only heightens the intrigue.

Will he opt for the glamour of Paris, the tradition of London, the history of Manchester, or the allure of North London?
