Osimhen: Newcastle reignite pursuit of Super Eagles star amid Premier League interest

Victor Osimhen’s future is set to dominate the summer transfer window, with Newcastle United among several clubs closely tracking the Nigerian striker.

Napoli are reportedly ready to part ways with the 26-year-old, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray and attracting widespread attention across Europe.

Osimhen has been in prolific form in Turkey, netting 17 goals in 22 appearances and is on course to challenge his career-best tally of 31 goals from the 2022/23 campaign.

His performances have not gone unnoticed, with Arsenal, Chelsea, and several Saudi clubs also keeping tabs on his situation.

Newcastle poised to end Arsenal’s long-standing pursuit of Osimhen

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, still grappling with Kai Havertz's inconsistent displays, remain keen on bolstering their attacking options.

The Gunners’ interest in the lanky forward dates back to 2016 when they attempted to sign him following his standout showing at the FIFA U17 World Cup. That move never materialized, with Osimhen opting for Wolfsburg instead.

However, Newcastle’s pursuit of Osimhen could indirectly benefit Arsenal. Should the Magpies succeed in landing the Nigerian, it may pave the way for Alexander Isak’s departure from St James' Park, offering the Gunners a potential opportunity to secure the Swedish forward, albeit with a hefty £150 million price tag to negotiate.

Napoli, who signed Romelu Lukaku last summer, have no intention of keeping Osimhen and are eager to cash in. Last year, Newcastle were invited to bid for the Nigerian but were deterred by his £113 million release clause. Now, with that figure reduced to £60 million, Premier League interest has reignited.

Wages could pose a challenge for any suitor. While Osimhen reportedly earned over £200,000 per week at Napoli, his current salary at Galatasaray has dropped to around £110,000. Though the Turkish side are eager to retain him, financial constraints are likely to make a permanent deal difficult.
