The Super Eagles suffered a 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2024) on Sunday night.
Nigeria opened the scoring through captain William Troost-Ekong in the first half.
Despite having the lead at the half-time break, José Peseiro‘s men were unable to hold on for the victory, as they conceded two second-half goals, losing to Ivory Coast.
The Super Eagles looked confused half the time, managing just one shot on target in 90 minutes of play.
Some fans were not very pleased with that performance, and they didn't hesitate to make their thoughts known on X (formerly Twitter).
Dozi_SE suggested Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze should not be called back to the Super Eagles squad, as both players were not ‘serious'.
In spite of Nigeria's impressive run at AFCON 2024, there are those who called for Peseiro to be fired.
Another X user claims the Super Eagles were playing like cowards, as they were too careful against the Ivorians.
Of course, there are those who were satisfied with the result, considering what the team achieved at the Nations Cup.
@shafiihamidu congratulated the Super Eagles for giving their very best.
Despite the poor performances of some of the Super Eagles players, some Nigerians believe the fault lies with Peseiro.
@nsidibeakpan23 claims the Portuguese coach should evolve his tactics, or the NFF must look for a better alternative.
As it stands, Nigeria have three gold, five silver and eight bronze medals at the Africa Cup of Nations.
In fact, no team has more semi-final appearances than the Super Eagles, who won more AFCON medals than every other team in the continent.
Next up for the Super Eagles are the World Cup qualifiers in June, where a rematch with AFCON semi-final opponent South Africa takes place.
There were also friendlies organised in China next month featuring among others, world champions Argentina, but those have been cancelled.
