Super Eagles star Uzoho celebrates first league title as Omonoia Nicosia end drought

Published on by

Francis Uzoho has won the 2025/26 Cypriot First Division title with Omonoia Nicosia after they beat Aris Limassol 3-0 on Saturday to seal the championship in style, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Super Eagles goalkeeper adds a first league title to his growing list of honours at the club, which includes two cup wins. Since joining Omonoia permanently in 2021, Uzoho has now won three trophies, but this is his biggest success yet.

Omonoia Nicosia were the best team throughout the season. They finished top of the table with 77 points, well ahead of second-placed AEK Larnaca, who had 61 points. Their strong performances meant they wrapped up the title with four matches still left to play.

The title win is also very important for the club’s history. It is their 22nd league title and their first since 2021, ending a five-year wait. This success also confirms their place in the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League qualifiers, where they will start from the second qualifying round.

In the match that sealed the title, Omonoia were simply too strong. Ryan Mmaee scored twice, while Muamer Tanković added the third goal to complete a comfortable victory over Aris Limassol. The team’s attacking strength and solid defence were key all season, as they finished with the best goal difference (+56) and kept clean sheets in 58% of their matches.

Under interim coach Giannis Anastasiou, the team found consistency and balance. While other clubs struggled with frequent coaching changes, Omonoia stayed focused and kept winning important matches.

Uzoho’s key role in Omonoia win

Although Francis Uzoho was mostly the second-choice goalkeeper this season, he played an important role whenever he was needed. The 27-year-old made five league appearances, keeping three clean sheets and conceding just three goals.

One of his biggest moments came in the title-clinching match. Uzoho came on in the 36th minute after first-choice goalkeeper Fabiano got injured. He stayed calm, made important saves, and helped the team keep a clean sheet to secure the trophy.

Across all competitions, Uzoho made 11 appearances and kept five clean sheets. In the UEFA Conference League, he featured in five matches and recorded two clean sheets, showing his quality on the European stage as well.

During a crucial period in March 2026, he stepped in as the starting goalkeeper and delivered back-to-back clean sheets, including a strong performance in a 2-0 win over Omonia Aradippou. These performances helped Omonoia maintain their lead at the top of the table.

Uzoho’s season was also busy because he represented Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he helped the Super Eagles win a bronze medal. Despite missing some club matches, he returned and continued to contribute whenever called upon.

With four matches still to play this season, Uzoho will hope to get more minutes as Omonoia celebrate a successful campaign. His contract runs until 2027, but there are already talks about his future, as he may look for more regular playing time.
