The Unity Cup returns after a 21-year hiatus, and Nigeria’s Super Eagles find themselves on unfamiliar turf but with familiar stakes.
At Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium on Wednesday, Nigeria will face West African rivals Ghana in the second semifinal of the revamped tournament, with a place in the final against Jamaica on the line. The loser will contest the third-place playoff against Trinidad and Tobago.
The last time the Unity Cup was held, back in 2004, Nigeria walked away with the title. Now, under the guidance of coach Eric Chelle, a new generation has the chance to make its mark. But the big question remains; is Ahmed Musa ready to contribute meaningfully on the pitch?

Is Musa ready to lead the Super Eagles from the front?
With several key names unavailable, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Alex Iwobi, Chelle has turned to a mix of returning internationals and NPFL talents. Among them is Ahmed Musa, who has rejoined the fold after a lengthy absence. However, despite his veteran status, it’s unclear whether the winger will start.
The forward pecking order still favours the likes of Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze, both of whom offer dynamism and consistency.
Musa’s leadership will be valuable in the dressing room, but he may need to settle for an impact role off the bench. Meanwhile, the spotlight may shine on Niger Tornadoes midfielder Papa Daniel, one of the few home-based players tipped to get the nod from the off.

While Papa Daniel and Nduka Junior are in contention for a starting role, most NPFL players are likely to be introduced gradually.
There’s also anticipation surrounding the potential debut of Felix Agu, the Werder Bremen defender who recently switched allegiance to Nigeria. Midfielder Christantus Uche, another new invitee, is also expected to earn his first cap under Chelle.
The inclusion of returnees such as Kelechi Iheanacho, Cyriel Dessers, and Nathan Tella gives Chelle plenty of attacking options, while Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyeka will provide steel in midfield.
Ghana, meanwhile, arrive in London with confidence, having thrashed Madagascar and Chad without conceding a goal in recent outings. Despite missing key names like Mohammed Kudus and Inaki Williams, the Black Stars remain a potent force with Jordan Ayew and Atalanta’s Ibrahima Sulemana in their ranks.
