The Unity Cup returns after a 21-year hiatus, and Nigeria’s Super Eagles find themselves on unfamiliar turf but with familiar stakes.
At Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium on Wednesday, Nigeria will face West African rivals Ghana in the second semifinal of the revamped tournament, with a place in the final against Jamaica on the line. The loser will contest the third-place playoff against Trinidad and Tobago.
The last time the Unity Cup was held, back in 2004, Nigeria walked away with the title. Now, under the guidance of coach Eric Chelle, a new generation has the chance to make its mark. And while questions linger over Ahmed Musa’s role, the spotlight has shifted to some exciting new faces.

NPFL trio handed Super Eagles starts as Musa waits on the bench
With several key names unavailable, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Alex Iwobi, Chelle has turned to a mix of returning internationals and NPFL talents.
Among them are Ismail Sodiq, Papa Daniels, and Sikiru Alimi who have all been handed full debuts against Ghana. Alimi leads the line alongside Cyriel Dessers, fresh off a stellar season with Rangers.
Ahmed Musa, rejoining the squad after a lengthy absence, does not start. Instead, Wilfred Ndidi captains the side in his place, with the Kano Pillars man expected to come on later in the match.

Despite his veteran presence, Musa will likely serve in a supporting role off the bench, providing leadership from the sidelines and energy if called upon.
While the inclusion of NPFL stars signals a bold approach, other fresh additions are also in line for their first taste of international action. Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu could feature later on, while midfielder Christantus Uche awaits his debut.
Chelle’s squad also benefits from the return of established names like Kelechi Iheanacho, Nathan Tella, and Frank Onyeka, while Wilfred Ndidi anchors the midfield with his usual composure and authority.
