Super Eagles news: What Millwall’s move for Thierno Ballo means for Azeez

Published on by

Super Eagles forward Femi Azeez faces an uncertain future at Championship side Millwall ahead of the summer transfer window, Afrik-Foot reports.

The two-cap Nigerian international has become the subject of growing transfer interest after publicly expressing his ambition to play in the Premier League, amid interested from Aston Villa and newly-promoted Ipswich Town.

Azeez joined Millwall in 2024 and enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last season, registering 19 goal contributions and earning a place in the EFL Championship Team of the Season for his remarkable performances.

It initially appeared his dream of playing in the top flight could be realized with Millwall, after they reached the Championship playoffs. However, their promotion hopes were ended by a 1-0 defeat to Hull City in the semifinals, further fuelling speculation over Azeez’s future at the club.

How Millwall’s decision on Ballo could affect Azeez’s future

According to reports in England, Millwall are not currently pursuing a permanent move for Thierno Ballo, although the situation could change as the summer progresses.

The former Chelsea academy winger spent last season on loan at The Lions from Austrian club Wolfsberger AC and made 31 appearances across all competitions, scoring once and providing five assists.

Millwall held an option to make the deal permanent for around £3 million, but negotiations stalled after the clubs failed to agree on how an additional £500,000 loan fee should be fixed into the package. While Millwall wanted that amount included in the overall transfer fee, Wolfsberger wanted the fee to be paid separately.

However, there remains a possibility that talks could be revived if Wolfsberger soften their stance. With Ballo’s contract set to expire at the end of next season, the Austrian club may be be forced to renegotiate terms rather than risk losing him on a free transfer next summer.

Should negotiations fail, Millwall are expected to move quickly for alternative targets which would open the door to a departure for Azeez. The Lions are already planning for life without the Super Eagles winger and are keen to secure a replacement as early as possible.

Millwall rejected a £20 million bid from Ipswich earlier in the transfer window and expect further offers for Azeez in the coming weeks.

They are now making efforts to sign another option on the wing, which could pave the way for Azeez to secure his Premier League move and begin the next chapter of his career.

Azeez: Where could the Super Eagles star end up?

Super Eagles newcomer Femi Azeez could finally be on his way out of Millwall this summer, especially if the their £30 million valuation is met.

Ipswich Town have already seen a £20 million offer turned down, but the newly-promoted side are expected to return with an improved bid as they look to strengthen their squad and avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

Aston Villa are also monitoring the situation, although any potential move could depend on player sales and departures to create room in their budget.

UEFA Conference League winners Crystal Palace have also expressed desire to sign the Super Eagles forward, especially as they plan a major rebuild this summer after losing several key players over recent transfer windows.

In the end, everything hinges on Millwall receiving an offer that matches their valuation and finding a suitable replacement.

Should that happen, Azeez may finally get the opportunity to fulfill his Premier League dream and begin the next phase of his career.
