Super Eagles star Ogbu leads Slavia Prague to Czech title as 3 Nigerian lads win first trophy

Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu helped SK Slavia Prague secure the 2025-26 Czech First League title after a commanding 5-1 victory over FK Jablonec at the Fortuna Arena in Prague on Wednesday night, Afrik-Foot reports.

The result confirmed Slavia Prague as champions for the second consecutive season and crowned another dominant campaign under coach Jindřich Trpišovský. While Ogbu celebrated his second straight Czech league crown, Nigerian youngsters David Moses, Samuel Isife and Mubarak Suleiman lifted the first major trophies of their professional careers.

Slavia entered the decisive Championship Group clash under pressure following recent disciplinary sanctions linked to crowd trouble during the Prague derby against rivals AC Sparta Prague. The forfeited derby defeat had slightly reduced their lead at the top of the table, but there was no sign of nerves against Jablonec.

The home side took control from the opening whistle with their trademark aggressive pressing and fast attacking football. Defender Štěpán Chaloupek opened the scoring in the 14th minute after Slavia pinned Jablonec deep inside their own half.

Nigerian defender Isife then produced one of the key moments of the evening in the 37th minute. The 21-year-old right-back timed his run perfectly before finishing calmly to double Slavia’s advantage and send the Fortuna Arena into celebration mode.

Before Jablonec could recover, Mojmír Chytil added a third goal in the 44th minute after another sweeping attacking move orchestrated by Lukáš Provod in midfield. By half-time, the game was already slipping beyond the visitors.

Slavia Prague: Nigerian quartet play key roles

Slavia Prague completed the demolition shortly after the restart. Veteran defender Tomáš Holeš made it 4-0 in the 49th minute before Chaloupek grabbed his second goal of the night seven minutes later to stretch the lead to five-nil.

Jablonec managed a late consolation through Eduard Sobol in the 62nd minute, but the night firmly belonged to Slavia and their growing Nigerian contingent.

Ogbu once again proved why he has become one of the most important defenders in Czech football. The Super Eagles centre-back marshalled a defence that produced one of the best defensive records in Europe this season, helping Slavia keep 16 clean sheets during the league campaign.

The former Rosenborg BK defender also contributed important goals during the title race, especially from set-pieces, while his leadership at the back helped Slavia maintain control during difficult moments late in the season.

David Moses also played a crucial role despite battling injuries earlier in the campaign. The midfielder returned strongly during the run-in and scored a decisive late winner against Sigma Olomouc before the championship round began, a goal now viewed as one of the defining moments of the season.

Teenage midfielder Suleiman added fresh creativity after breaking into the first team in February. The 19-year-old quickly impressed with his composure and technical quality, giving Trpišovský another attacking option during the final stretch of the title race.

Slavia’s triumph was built on consistency. They won 21 of their first 30 league matches and lost only once during the regular season. Their important 3-1 victory over Sparta Prague in March gave them full control of the title race before Wednesday’s emphatic finish against Jablonec officially sealed another championship
