Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has signed a professional contract with NWSL side Washington Spirit, opting to forgo her final two years of NCAA eligibility at the University of Pittsburgh.

The 21-year-old has committed to a three-year deal with an option to extend through 2028, taking up an international slot on the Spirit roster.

Abiodun‘s transition to the professional ranks marks another significant step in her burgeoning career. Having previously played for Rivers Angels in Nigeria, she earned a full scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh, where she featured prominently over two seasons.

Her performances did not go unnoticed, tallying 10 goals and three assists in 34 appearances, earning her United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region honors and a spot on the All-ACC Third Team in 2024.

Abiodun’s talent has been evident on the international stage as well. She represented Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and featured in the 2024 Paris Olympics with the Super Falcons.

“Especially with a team that cares about its players’ growth and development, which makes Washington Spirit a perfect team for me to achieve my purpose.”

Abiodun becomes the second Nigerian to join Washington Spirit, following in the footsteps of Francisca Ordega, who played for the club from 2015 to 2018.

With Abiodun in their ranks, the Spirit aim to build on their second-place finish in the NWSL last season as they target silverware in 2025.
