Italian-born Nigerian defender Michael Kayode has emerged as a potential target for Premier League side Tottenham, according to reports in the Italian media.
The 19-year-old right-back enjoyed a breakout season with Fiorentina in Serie A last season, making 26 appearances and contributing to three goals.
He made his debut against Genoa last August and went on to feature 37 times across all competitions for Fiorentina in his first full season with the first team.
Kayode's rapid development has attracted interest from Tottenham, who are looking for a replacement for Emerson Royal. The Brazilian's future at the North London club appears uncertain, with links to AC Milan, clubs in the Saudi Pro League, and Brazilian side Flamengo.
The price tag for Kayode could be a sticking point, however. With a contract running until 2028, Fiorentina have slapped a €40 million price tag on the young defender, a reflection of his potential and long-term value.
While Tottenham's interest is a significant development in Kayode's young career, he previously attracted the attention of Arsenal as well. This transfer saga highlights the rising stock of the talented defender.
Michael Kayode: Rising star, international dilemma
At the international level, Kayode faces an interesting decision. While he has represented Italy at the U-21 level, his Nigerian heritage makes him eligible for the Super Eagles. Given his impressive form, it wouldn't be surprising if Italy coach Luciano Spalletti, known for promoting young talent, takes notice.
However, Nigeria, runners-up at the recent 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), would undoubtedly welcome Kayode with open arms. The question remains – will he choose the Azzurri or the Super Eagles?
