Victor Boniface or Patrik Schick: Erik ten Hag makes heartbreaking choice

After two years, the striker rivalry between Victor Boniface and Patrik Schick may now be over.

New Bayer Leverkusen coach Erik ten Hag has made his decision – according to Sport BILD, it is the Czech international who has won out, effectively rubber-stamping the departure of the 24-year-old this summer.

The Dutch manager will count on Schick for the coming season, and the club have already identified a young understudy for the 29-year-old. Christian Kofane, 18, from Albacete, will be the backup, effectively taking Boniface’s place in the squad.

Where will Victor Boniface move this summer?

The implications for the Nigeria international are obvious, but his ultimate destination is no clearer.

Boniface came close to leaving Leverkusen in January, only for a proposed move to Al Nassr to fall through at the last minute.

The former Union St Gilloise man endured a mixed season, losing his spot in the starting lineup and being voted the third biggest Bundesliga flop of the campaign by his fellow professionals despite managing a respectable 11 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions.

While there are few concrete transfer links, it is believed that Premier League side Newcastle hold a long-term interest in the striker.
