Former Orlando Pirates forward Lebohang Mokoena thinks Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen should have conducted himself in a better manner during his confrontation with fans.
Petersen nearly punched a fan on Wednesday night after insults were hurled at him following Chiefs’ Nedbank Cup loss to Stellenbosch FC.
The Glamour Boys lost 2-1 to exit the competition at the Round of 32 and when Petersen went to salute fans after the game, a confrontation ensued as some supporters had a go at him with one sprinkling water on him.
Petersen should have acted better
The angry and frustrated Chiefs goalkeeper threw a punch but was held back by a steward as the situation threatened to get ugly before he left shortly after.
Mokoena understands that the player might have felt disrespected but feels he should have controlled his emotions and not allowed the insults to get under his skin.
“He could have handled it a little bit better because also as a former footballer, we are always hurled with insults,” Mokoena said on SoccerBeat.
“Going to the corner flag to take a corner kick, I have always got those kinds of comments whether it is coming from my own fans or opposition fans.”
What should the player have done?
The former Mamelodi Sundowns star has advised Petersen and other players to learn how to handle criticism to avoid ugly confrontations that could ruin their image.
“It is something we have learnt to deal with as professional players,” added the 39-year-old.
“We have to handle criticism in a different manner, especially wearing the club’s kit. It is not a good example also for the youngsters that are watching. As much as I do not condone what the fan did but also it is out of frustration.”
