Chiefs suffer transfer blow as midfield target chooses Tanzanian giants

Kaizer Chiefs’ pursuit of Tanzanian midfielder Feisal Salum has perhaps come to an end following news that the playmaker has agreed to return to his former team

Salum’s future has been a subject of interest since last year when it emerged that he was entering into the final year of his contract with big-spending Tanzanian Premier League club Azam FC.

Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns were the two South African clubs credited with an interest while Simba SC of Tanzania, now coached by Fadlu Davids, were also in the mix.

However, Salum did not move last year and this year, the speculation has increased after he reportedly rejected a new and improved offer from Azam to extend his stay.

Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi was also reported to have travelled to Tanzania recently to look at the player and try to convince him to move to Mzansi but latest reports suggest Salum has agreed to return to champions Yanga.

According to Tanzanian outlet The Citizen, Salum, popularly known as Fei Toto, has agreed personal terms with Yanga with a three-year deal on the table although Azam deny that an offer has been made to them by their league rivals for the transfer of the in-demand midfielder.

Returning to Yanga for Salum is a major surprise as he had played for the club for four years from 2018-2023 but his departure happened in controversial fashion.

With his deal coming to an end, he reached an agreement with Azam and wanted to be released midseason by Yanga but the Dar es Salaam-based club refused, leading to the player going on a self-imposed exile.

It took the intervention of Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan before Yanga agreed to let Salum leave for Azam but they seem to have got their revenge now as they are set to sign him for free after pocketing a hefty transfer fee for the same player two years ago.
