Ex-Bafana Bafana captain identifies where Khuliso Mudau must improve

Former Bafana Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo has given Mamelodi Sundowns right-back Khuliso Mudau advice on the areas he needs to improve to be a complete full-back.

Mudau has established himself as Sundowns’ and Bafana Bafana’s first-choice in his position due to his impressive performances especially in defence.

However, Khumalo feels while the 30-year-old is great at defending, his output in the final third is very low and he needs to work on it.

Khumalo believes Mudau would be unstoppable if he was a big threat offensively given the demands of the modern game on full-backs.

“Locally, he is the best I have ever seen. I would love to play next to him because I would literally be playing with a cigar,” Khumalo said on SuperSport TV.

“No one goes past him, he is incredible. But once you start moving up the levels, especially now playing with wingbacks, they start looking in the last third how productive are you. What are you doing in the last third?

“Defensively [he is okay] so, that is just the other side of his game whereby if he gets an opportunity to play at a higher level, I believe that will get better.

Sundowns right-back’s attacking numbers are low

“The fundamentals he does have and it is so important for him to go one level so that his game can grow.”

Mudau was trusted at right-back in all three of Sundowns’ games at the FIFA Club World Cup but his decision-making when he got in attacking areas was wanting, leading to the observation from the former SuperSport United centre-back.

He has been at Sundowns since joining from Black Leopards in 2020, playing 157 games, managing seven goals and eight assists but there is a feeling that attacking numbers would have been higher had he been more effective in the final third.
