Golden Arrows vs Kaizer Chiefs: Preview, team news, time and where to watch

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs will go in search of a fourth league win in five league matches when they visit Golden Arrows in at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday.

Chiefs have started the season in fine fashion after winning three and drawing one, while keeping clean sheets in all the matches, and remain the only side yet to concede in the PSL so far.

The good run sees Nasreddine Nabi’s team joint top of the table with Sekhukhune United with 10 points and another win on Saturday will keep them there and raise expectations among fans.

Chiefs go into the match high on confidence after winning 2-0 against Stellenbosch before back-to-back 1-0 wins over Polokwane City and Richards Bay were followed up with a goalless draw against champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Golden Arrows will not be pushovers as they have won two, drawn one and lost another of their four matches. After starting the season with defeat, Manqoba Mngqithi’s team have now gone three matches without defeat to stay fifth on the log with seven points.

Chiefs have had a bad run against Arrows in recent meetings with Abafana Besthende beating Amakhosi home and away last season.

In their last 10 meetings, Chiefs have won this fixture only three times with Arrows claiming six victories while one ended in a draw and these are damning statistics that the Glamour Boys will be looking to change on Saturday.

Team news

Chiefs will still be without defender Aden McCarthy, who is nursing a hamstring injury, while Paseka Mako will likely continue at left-back as there has not been news about Bradley Cross, Nkanyisa Shinga and Happy Mashiane who missed the Sundowns match due to injuries.

What have they said?

Arrows coach Mngqithi says his players need no motivation to play against Chiefs as they fully understand the occasion and the importance of another three points.

“Going into Chiefs’ game, I don’t think it’s up to me to motivate them [Arrows players], unlike the game of Magesi. Against Magesi, I have to dig very deep just to make them understand how important it is to get the three points,” said Mngqithi.

“But against Chiefs, the level of intrinsic motivation is very high. You must just try to control the anxiety, because when the motivation is that high, there is a very big chance of anxiety, which is an enemy of good technical execution. When you are anxious, you can’t execute technically the way you want to.”
