Petersen opens up about Kaizer Chiefs’ leadership following Yusuf Maart’s exit

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen says the team has coped well with the departure of captain Yusuf Maart, who left the club for Austrian club SV Ried.

Maart left Chiefs in July after landing the big-money deal and Inacio Miguel was named club captain to replace him despite just joining the club last year.

Petersen says it is not just the Angolan defender who has leadership qualities at Chiefs as there are other players who step up to the plate when needed.

“I think there are quite a few leaders in the team. I mean, guys lead in different ways—some lead by example, some lead by word of mouth. So, I think we have quite a few different characters, different leaders in the group,” Petersen told the media as per iDiski Times.

“I think Yusuf was a great leader. He’s been with the team for a while, and he has a good relationship with some, with most of the players. So, I think with him going, I mean, it’s a good move for him you always want to see your fellow teammates and players, taking that next step in their careers.”

Petersen believes Miguel was the right pick for captain at the club and is backing him to lead the team with distinction as they go in search of glory.

“So, I think it’s a good move for him in terms of leadership in the team. I mean, Miguel is a natural leader,” he added.

Inacio Miguel captains Kaizer Chiefs during CUFA Cup.

“And I think he leads by action. You can see the way he plays, the way he conducts himself, and there are a lot of guys that look up to him in terms of it.

“So, I think within the team we have, we have quite a few good, solid leaders. And I think the important thing is for us as leaders, to come together and just try and stay focused, and guide the younger ones, and, when we see that things are not going the way they’re supposed to go, it’s for us to put our brands and try and realign everything.”

Under Miguel’s leadership, Chiefs have started the season with three straight PSL wins which have left them joint top of the table with nine points, same as Sekhukhune United.
