Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi has moved within three goals of Osaze Odemwingie on the list of Nigeria’s highest all-time goalscorers in the English Premier League, Afrik-Foot reports.

On Sunday, Fulham claimed an important 3-1 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The Super Eagles midfielder started for the Cottagers and produced a top-class performance, scoring once and providing an assist.

Those goal involvements took his tally to three goals and three assists in 21 appearances in the English top flight this season.

Aside from his impact on the match, his goal drew him closer to reaching a historic landmark. According to Sporty TV, Iwobi’s strike on Sunday was his 34th in the Premier League.

This moves him significantly closer to retired Super Eagles attacker Osaze Odemwingie’s goal record in the competition.

Odemwingie, now 44, enjoyed a decent career in England playing for West Brom, Cardiff City, and Stoke City.

He contributed 37 goals and 13 assists in a total of 129 Premier League appearances. Currently, Odemwingie sits sixth on the Nigerian all-time scoring list, while Iwobi is seventh. With four more goals, Iwobi will officially surpass him.

If Alex Iwobi finds the net four more times, he will overtake Osaze Odemwingie to claim the sixth spot. However, he remains some distance away from the legendary Yakubu Aiyegbeni, who leads the rankings with a staggering 95 goals in the English top flight.

The second player in the rankings is the iconic Nwankwo Kanu with 54 goals, while Efan Ekoku sits third with 52. Shola Ameobi occupies the fourth spot with 43 goals, with Kelechi Iheanacho breathing down his neck in fifth place with 42 goals.

Given Iwobi’s current scoring rate, it may be a challenge to score four more goals before the end of the current campaign to surpass Odemwingie this term.

However, bar any unexpected summer transfers, he will be at Fulham next season. With his undeniable quality and consistency under Marco Silva, Iwobi can certainly fancy his chances of breaking into the top five by next year.
