Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen has praised the technical quality shown by Nigeria's squad during their first training sessions in Abuja, where preparation has begun in earnest for next month’s 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers against the Black Galaxies of Ghana.
The CHAN tournament, exclusively for players competing domestically in their home countries, will see Nigeria face eternal rivals Ghana over two legs in late December. The winner will advance to the 2025 CHAN, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Eguavoen, who called up 35 players to camp, noted the impressive start shown by the team despite only two training sessions.
“Very impressive, only two training sessions, but you can see that technically they are very good,” Eguavoen remarked to NFF TV.
Eguavoen's emphasis on cohesion for CHAN mandate
The former Gent defender who serves as the main Super Eagles and home-based Eagles coach acknowledged the work still needed to unify players from different clubs.
“We still have a lot of work to do because they are coming from different clubs. We have to try to see how we can blend them into one unit,” he explained.
Eguavoen added that this roster remains provisional, as players continue to compete for spots.
“This is not the final squad. There are some players we are still looking at… Next week, some will come back, and others will not. We will try to come up with a formidable team in the end,” he said.
The first leg qualifier against Ghana is scheduled between December 20-22, with Nigeria hosting the return leg the following week.
