Kelechi Iheanacho to Fenerbahçe: Why Super Eagles star is wanted in Istanbul

Published on by

Fenerbahçe are reportedly interested in signing Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho in January after his impressive start to life in Turkey.

The former Celtic forward has scored 16 goals and provided three assists in 12 matches for second-division side Bursaspor this season.

The Nigeria international has scored in every match he has played, setting a new goal record in Turkish football and attracting interest from clubs in the Süper Lig.

Fenerbahçe have emerged as the biggest admirers of the former Manchester City and Leicester City striker. The Istanbul giants could make a move for Iheanacho during the January transfer window as they look to reignite their fading title chances.

2 reasons Fenerbahçe desperately need Kelechi Iheanacho

1. Fenerbahçe need to close the gap on Osimhen and Galatasaray

Fenerbahçe have fallen behind their rivals in the Süper Lig title race. They sit fifth with 16 points from nine matches, six points behind leaders Galatasaray.

Their 2-1 derby defeat on Monday made matters worse, with Victor Osimhen scoring twice to secure victory for the Turkish champions.

2. They need more options in attack

Fenerbahçe have experienced forwards in Romelu Lukaku and Vedat Muriqi, but Iheanacho would give them another option up front.

The Nigerian can play as a central striker, operate behind the main forward or partner another striker. He can also drop deep to link up with midfielders and create chances for his teammates.

That versatility could prove useful against teams that defend deep and leave little space for Fenerbahçe’s attackers.

Signing the Nigerian would give the Yellow-Navy Blues another reliable source of goals as they look to catch Galatasaray and get their title challenge back on track.
