Atalanta and Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has credited his decision to switch allegiance to Nigeria as a transformative moment in his career.
The 27-year-old, who was born in London to Nigerian parents, represented England’s youth teams, including winning the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017.
However, after missing out on senior call-ups, Lookman made the switch to represent the Super Eagles in 2022, a decision he describes as life-changing.
Obeying the call: Lookman’s turning point
“It was massive for me because that was really the big turning point in my career,” Lookman said in an interview with Sporty TV.
“I think ever since I put on the Super Eagles jersey, it’s been fruitful, you know. We’ve been able to achieve a lot as a team, and we’re still going as a team, but the camaraderie of the team is something that’s very special within the squad.”
Since making his debut during the 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Ghana, Lookman has become a key player for Nigeria.
At the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, he scored three goals and contributed an assist, leading the Super Eagles to the final and earning a spot in the tournament's Team of the Tournament.
From Panenka pain to Super Eagles gain
Lookman endured difficult spells at Everton, Leicester City, and Fulham, where his failed Panenka penalty infamously contributed to the Cottagers' relegation in 2020. However, his fortunes have taken a remarkable turn since joining Atalanta in 2022.
He has twice been named Atalanta’s Player of the Season and played a pivotal role in their UEFA Europa League triumph last season, capped by a hat-trick in the final.
The timing of Lookman’s resurgence at club level also coincided with his international switch to Nigeria.
“Ever since I joined the Super Eagles, everything has gone upwards for me,” he shared, expressing pride in donning Nigeria’s iconic green and white jersey.
His stellar form has not gone unnoticed, earning him a place in the final five for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award.
