Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen marked the New Year in style, netting his 10th league goal of the season as Galatasaray edged past Göztepe 2-1 in a hard-fought Turkish Super Lig clash on Saturday.
The win extends Galatasaray's lead at the top of the table to 11 points, leaving their rivals Fenerbahçe playing catch-up, with a game in hand.
The Nigerian striker made an instant impact, converting from the penalty spot in the 10th minute after Djalma Silva’s foul on Kaan Ayhan was spotted by the referee. Calm and composed, Osimhen rifled his shot into the high centre of the goal to give the hosts an early advantage.
However, Göztepe responded with a stunning equaliser in the 27th minute, courtesy of Romulo. The Brazilian’s powerful finish, set up by the impressive Kaduna-born Anthony Dennis, showcased the visitors' intent.
The 20-year-old Dennis stood out in midfield, displaying maturity beyond his years with his creativity and work rate.
Galatasaray regained control in the second half, with Yunus Akgün finding the winner in the 61st minute after a clever assist from Dries Mertens. The home side managed to hold on for the win despite Göztepe’s spirited efforts.
Osimhen’s performance in numbers
Osimhen, substituted in the 87th minute for Michy Batshuayi, ended the match with impressive numbers. He completed 87 minutes, registering one goal from an expected goals (xG) tally of 0.79.
His performance included one shot on target, three ground duels (winning one), and five aerial duels (winning three). The striker’s influence extended beyond goals, as he also contributed defensively with a clearance.
Since joining Galatasaray, Osimhen has been a revelation, scoring 13 goals and delivering four assists in 16 appearances across all competitions. His form has been pivotal in the club's dominance this season.
