Paul Onuachu was the hero as Trabzonspor secured a dramatic 4-2 win over Istanbul Basaksehir in the Turkish Cup on Tuesday night, Afrik-Foot reports.

The exciting encounter took place at the Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium, where both teams knew only a victory would guarantee a place in the top two of Group A and a ticket to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Trabzonspor started brightly and took the lead as early as the sixth minute through Brazilian forward Felipe Augusto. The visitors controlled much of the first half and went into the break with their narrow advantage intact.

However, the second half told a different story. Just one minute after the restart, Nuno Da Costa equalised for Basaksehir. The home side then went in front in the 66th minute when Ivan Brnic completed the turnaround, putting pressure on Trabzonspor.

With his team trailing, coach Fatih Tekke turned to Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu, introducing him from the bench. The change quickly made an impact.

Paul Onuachu’s moment of magic

Trabzonspor found new energy after Onuachu’s arrival. Mustafa Eskihellaç drew them level in the 70th minute, setting up a tense finish.

Basaksehir’s hopes suffered a huge blow when Senegal defender Ousseynou Ba was shown a straight red card in the 79th minute, reducing the hosts to ten men.

Five minutes later, Onuachu, who has been setting new goal records in Turkey, produced the moment of the night. The Super Eagles striker powered into the penalty area, beat his marker with strength and skill, skipped past another defender and calmly slotted the ball beyond the goalkeeper. It was a brilliant solo effort from the Saudi-linked forward that restored Trabzonspor’s lead.

Barely a minute later, Ozan Tufan sealed the victory in dramatic fashion. Pressing high immediately after kick-off, he blocked the goalkeeper’s clearance, and the ball rolled straight into the net to make it 4-2.

The win lifted Trabzonspor to nine points, enough to finish second in Group A and qualify for the quarter-finals. Basaksehir, who ended on six points, were knocked out of the competition.

Onuachu, the Turkish Super Lig’s top goalscorer with 18 league goals, will be key as Trabzonspor aim to win the Turkish Cup for the first time since 2020.
