Sadiq threatens Super Eagles boycott: ‘It does not feel like home’

Real Sociedad and Nigeria forward, Umar Sadiq has spoken out about the intense criticism Nigerian players face when representing the national team.

The 27-year-old, who surprisingly made the squad for Nigeria's recent AFCON 2025 qualifiers, reflected on the toll that negativity from fans has on the team, warning that it could discourage players from committing to the Super Eagles.

In an interview with OmaSports TV, Sadiq did not hold back on the mental strain caused by unsupportive fans.

“If things continue like this, there are lots of players that will not like to play for the Super Eagles,” he warned. “When we come to play here, it’s not about the money; it’s for the love. Where you feel is your home, they tell you it’s not.”

Sadiq compared the support Nigerian players receive abroad to the often unforgiving reception at home.

“When you go to Europe to play, you’re loved and supported, but when you come to your country, your people begin to ask what you’re doing and who brought you, even telling you to return to Europe,” he said.

“Some of my teammates are down after every game because the fans are killing them on social media.

“Even if you don’t see the comments, your name still gets mentioned. Football these days is about mentality; if you’re not mentally tough, you cannot play football,” he remarked.

Despite Sadiq’s outspoken remarks about the pressures faced by Nigerian players, his inclusion in the Super Eagles squad drew attention due to his underwhelming form this season.

Sadiq has yet to score or register an assist for Real Sociedad so far this season, and has amassed just 205 minutes of action across two starts and four substitute appearances.
