Samuel Chukwueze: Exit-bound Super Eagles star signs off with spark in Milan win

If Saturday’s performance was indeed Samuel Chukwueze’s swan song in AC Milan colours, it was a fitting one.

The Super Eagles winger came off the bench early in the second half and immediately sparked life into Milan’s attack, setting up Matteo Gabbia’s 64th-minute opener in a comfortable 2-0 win over already-relegated Monza.

It was a reminder of the quality that first brought him to San Siro and a timely one too, with Bologna circling ahead of the summer transfer window.

Chukwueze, who joined from Villarreal in 2023, has endured a stop-start spell in Italy, often finding himself on the fringes.

Despite operating under three different managers in two seasons, the 26-year-old has struggled to nail down a consistent starting berth. Across 36 appearances in all competitions this season, only 11 have been starts. He’s managed five goals, three assists, and averaged just 38 minutes per match.

Chukwueze’s Milan spell ends with a reminder of what might have been

Saturday’s performance was a glimpse into the version of Chukwueze Milan fans had hoped to see more often.

He completed two of three take-ons, played three key passes, and won three of his seven ground duels; sharp and purposeful, even without a shot on target. His passing was crisp too, finding a teammate with 18 of his 21 attempts.

Bologna boss Vincenzo Italiano, who pushed for his signature in January, may finally get his chance. With Milan bracing for a summer shake-up after another underwhelming campaign, Chukwueze looks set to be one of those moved on.

At 26, the potential is still there. If Milan can’t wait any longer, Bologna might just be the fresh start he needs.
