Chelsea have reportedly put Super Eagles-eligible midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka on the transfer list for January, as Premier League newbies Ipswich Town lead the chase.
The Eisenstadt-born joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2022 for £20 million, but, with only three appearances this season and no Premier League starts, he has found himself surplus to requirements under manager Enzo Maresca.
Chukwuemeka’s current contract at Chelsea runs until 2028, giving the Blues a potential long-term asset. However, as Chelsea pursue defensive reinforcements, the club is prepared to accept offers below the £40 million valuation they initially set for him this past summer.
According to TEAMtalk, Ipswich Town’s initial inquiry indicates a strong interest from the 17th-place club, which is seeking more firepower to bolster their fight against relegation. Ipswich have previously signed Omari Hutchison from Chelsea, a move that could pave the way for the 21-year-old’s transfer to East Anglia.
Interest from AC Milan and potential Super Eagles role for Carney Chukwuemeka
In addition to Ipswich, Chukwuemeka’s availability has attracted interest from Serie A giants AC Milan. For Ipswich, however, the urgency is heightened as they look to escape a relegation battle, sitting just one point above the drop zone.
Chukwuemeka made a name for himself internationally with England’s U-19 team, playing a key role in their 2022 UEFA European U-19 Championship victory. He has represented England at various youth levels (U17, U18, U19, and U20), but his Nigerian heritage keeps him eligible for the Super Eagles.
With Nigeria currently looking to strengthen its midfield, Chukwuemeka’s creative play could provide an attractive option if he opts to switch allegiance.
