Victor Osimhen transfer: Key reason Atletico turned down pursuit of Galatasaray striker

Published on by

Victor Osimhen’s future has taken another sharp twist after Atlético Madrid cooled their interest in the Galatasaray striker, Afrik Foot reports.

The Nigerian striker remains one of Europe’s most in-demand forwards after another prolific campaign with Galatasaray, where he scored 22 goals and provided six assists in 33 appearances across all competitions. Those numbers have kept him firmly on the radar of clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid.

While many expected Atlético to intensify their interest, especially with uncertainty surrounding Julián Álvarez, fresh reports suggest the Spanish giants have walked away from the race.

It is a surprising development considering Osimhen had previously been viewed as one of the most natural fits for Diego Simeone’s aggressive system.

Why Atletico Madrid turned down Victor Osimhen

According to transfer insider Matteo Moretto, Osimhen was offered to Atlético Madrid in recent weeks, but the club hierarchy were unconvinced, not by his ability, but by his personality and character.

Osimhen’s football profile has never been in question. He remains one of Europe’s most complete centre-forwards: explosive in transition, dominant in aerial duels, relentless in pressing and lethal in front of goal.

However, Atlético’s reservations are centred around the striker’s character management, a factor that has quietly followed Osimhen since his time at Napoli.

From his public fallout with SSC Napoli over social media controversies, to his fiery on-pitch confrontations, and even internal disagreements during international duty, there is a perception in the Atleti boardroom that managing Osimhen might not be the easiest thing to do.

Surprisingly, that might be were Diego Simeone drew the line. While he likes his players fiery on the pitch, the dressing room is solely his to control.

Even with Osimhen’s obvious qualities, Atlético may have concluded that introducing such a strong and combustible personality into an already intense environment could upset that balance.

Los Rojiblancos reasons align with what former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju recently said about Osimhen’s leadership skills.

“Leadership requires more than talent. A captain must possess playing quality, leadership ability, emotional control, and the capacity to represent and unite the team both on and off the pitch. He should have controlled his emotions [against Lookman at the AFCON],” the 55-year-old said.

How Atletico Madrid’s decision affect Osimhen’s transfer future

Atlético pulling out narrows one of Osimhen’s most ideal destinations, but in no way does it taint the value the striker brings to any team.

If anything, it sharpens the race elsewhere. Manchester United remain serious admirers and are still in the market for a proven striker, while Arsenal continue to assess elite attacking options.

More importantly, Galatasaray are still in a position of strength. The Turkish champions have already made it clear that they do not want to sell him and are even prepared to offer him the captaincy and the iconic number nine shirt to further cement his place at the club.

Osimhen himself has also publicly spoken about his happiness in Istanbul. That means unless a club arrives with an offer too big to ignore, likely in the €130m to €150m range, Galatasaray are in a pretty comfortable situation.

For Osimhen, Atlético’s rejection may sting, especially given how naturally his game seemed to suit Simeone’s system, but elite strikers rarely stay on the market for long, and if there is one thing the former LOSC Lille forward has consistently proven, it is that goals always spark interest.
