Super Eagles and AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze endured a frustrating night at the San Siro on Sunday as he suffered what appeared to be a hamstring injury in Milan’s 1-1 draw with AS Roma.
The injury could sideline the Nigerian international for several weeks, just as he was beginning to show signs of settling into life at AC Milan.
Chukwueze was actively involved during his 62 minutes on the pitch, offering glimpses of his creativity despite not getting on the scoresheet.
The 25-year-old managed 38 touches, completing 22 out of 27 passes (81%). His three key passes demonstrated his potential to influence the game, including a clever pass to Tijjani Reijnders in the 32nd minute that could have been an assist had the shot not been saved.
Chukwueze also completed one successful dribble from his sole attempt, registered one shot on target, and struck two efforts that were blocked.
He proved useful with his long balls, completing all four attempts, but struggled with accuracy in crossing, delivering just one unsuccessful attempt.
His defensive contribution included two ground duels (one won) and one aerial duel where he came up short. However, his involvement wasn’t without flaws, as he lost possession eight times before being substituted in the 62nd minute.
Injury timing raises questions over Chukwueze's future
The timing of Chukwueze’s injury is particularly concerning, as reports have linked the winger to a potential swap deal involving Arsenal’s Jakub Kiwior.
The injury could complicate Milan’s plans, especially given the Nigerian’s underwhelming start to his Serie A career.
Since joining AC Milan in July 2023 from Villarreal, where he made 207 appearances, scored 37 goals, and contributed 31 assists, Chukwueze has struggled to replicate his form.
In 21 appearances across all competitions this season, he has scored three goals and provided one assist, mainly coming off the bench.
With Milan reportedly considering loaning or transferring him permanently, this injury adds uncertainty to his future at the club.
