France vs Senegal: Michael Olise set to make Nigerian history at 2026 World Cup

Published on by

France begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on Tuesday, June 16, with a blockbuster Group I clash against Senegal at the MetLife Stadium, in East Rutherford, Afrik-Foot reports.

The match carries added importance because it rekindles memories of one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history. Back in 2002, tournament debutants Senegal stunned defending champions France 1-0 in Seoul, South Korea, thanks to Papa Bouba Diop’s famous winner. Twenty-four years later, the two nations meet again on football’s biggest stage, this time in the United States.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm Nigerian Time, with Australian referee Alireza Faghani in charge of proceedings.

Didier Deschamps has named an attack-packed France side led by captain Kylian Mbappe. Behind the Real Madrid superstar are Ballon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembele, Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise and exciting youngster Desire Doue. The French midfield is anchored by Aurelien Tchouameni and Adrien Rabiot, while Mike Maignan starts in goal behind a defence featuring Jules Kounde, William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano and Theo Hernandez.

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw, who was part of the Teranga Lions squad during the famous 2002 tournament, has trusted experienced names for the showdown. Captain Kalidou Koulibaly leads the defence alongside Moussa Niakhate, while former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy starts between the posts. In attack, Senegal will rely on the pace and creativity of Sadio Mane, Nicolas Jackson and Ismaila Sarr.

A talented France enter the contest as favourites after scoring multiple goals in nine of their last ten matches. Their game plan is expected to revolve around dominating possession and stretching Senegal’s defensive shape through the dribbling ability of Dembele and Olise on the wings. Senegal, meanwhile, will look to frustrate France before launching quick counter-attacks through Mane and Jackson whenever opportunities arise.

France: Michael Olise’s historic World Cup moment

While France and Senegal battle for three important points, the spotlight will also be on Michael Olise, who is set to achieve a unique milestone.

The Bayern Munich star becomes the first player of Nigerian descent to represent France at a FIFA World Cup. Throughout their history, Les Bleus have fielded players with roots in countries such as Senegal, Mali, Cameroon and DR Congo, but no player with Nigerian heritage has previously appeared for France at the tournament.

Olise’s background reflects the multicultural nature of modern football. Born in Hammersmith, London, he was eligible to play for four countries. His father, Vincent Olise, is Nigerian, while his mother has French-Algerian heritage. As a result, he could have represented Nigeria, France, Algeria or England at senior international level.

The 24-year-old has often spoken about his admiration for French football. Growing up in England, he watched videos of legendary French stars Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry, influences that eventually shaped his international decision.

His form heading into the World Cup has justified Deschamps’ faith in him. During the 2025-26 season, Olise produced outstanding numbers for Bayern Munich, registering 15 Bundesliga goals and 20 assists. He also strengthened his claim for a starting spot by scoring a hat-trick in France’s final pre-World Cup friendly against Northern Ireland on June 9.

Before breaking into the senior French team, Olise had already demonstrated his quality in tournament football by helping France win a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

How Nigeria lost the race for Olise

Long before he established himself as one of Europe’s most exciting wingers, the Nigeria Football Federation worked extensively to convince Olise to play for the Super Eagles.

Former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr and assistant Tunde Adelakun monitored the youngster closely during his time at Reading between 2019 and 2020. They met with him and attempted to persuade him to join Nigeria’s national team project while he was still developing in the English Championship.

Their efforts continued into March 2021 when Rohr included the then-19-year-old on Nigeria’s standby list for crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Lesotho. At that stage, Olise was only one step away from making his senior debut for the Super Eagles.

However, several factors prevented the move from becoming reality. One major obstacle was documentation. Olise did not possess a Nigerian passport at the time, making it difficult for him to be promoted from the standby list into the active squad. The COVID-19 pandemic also disrupted international schedules and complicated recruitment efforts across world football.

The decisive turning point arrived later in 2021 when Olise completed a move from Reading to Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Playing regularly in England’s top division increased his visibility and strengthened his belief that he could earn a place in France’s senior national team.

That ambition eventually became reality. Despite Nigeria’s persistent interest, Olise chose France, believing it offered the best route to achieving his international goals. He later explained that although he respected all four countries he was eligible to represent, his dream was to establish himself as a key player for Les Bleus.

As France face Senegal in a standout fixture of the opening round, Olise prepares for a historic World Cup debut. While it is another opportunity for France to pursue a third world title, it serves as a reminder for Nigeria of the talented player who came remarkably close to wearing the green and white jersey before choosing a different path.
